Protection for CERN 2.0

The Geneva-based CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) is the largest particle physics research facility in the world. After the successful completed tender - which was won by OVIT in 2012 - for the modernisation of the protection and control system for its 66 kV substations of CERN, new tender was announced in 2016. The MVM OVIT Zrt. (The MVM OVIT National Power Line Company Ltd.) won this important project as well.

To meet the extreme energy requirements of the research process (the annual energy consumption of CERN is about 1 TWh), the plant uses a dedicated 400 kV substation and transformer capacity of about 200 MW to feed the 66 kV main distribution system.
MVM OVIT, the Hungarian company with the most extensive experience in implementing power grids, bid with Protecta’s EuroProt+ product line and won the assignment for the commissioning of the entire system. The fact that the protection and control system is based on devices developed in Hungary adds to the value of the project.

The successful implementation of this project will be an important international reference for Protecta Ltd. in its expansion in international markets.
