CERN
Geneva-based CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research), the largest particle physics research facility in the world, issued a call for tenders for the modernisation of the protection and control system for its 66 kV substations. This international tender was won by MVM OVIT Zrt.CERN, a supranational organization similar to the UN, has 20 member counties including Hungary, and draws on the research work of about ten thousands scientists. To meet the extreme energy requirements (the annual energy consumption of CERN is about 1 TWh), the plant has a dedicated 400 kV substation and transformer capacity of about 200 MW to feed the 66 kV main distribution system.
MVM OVIT, the Hungarian company with the most extensive experience in implementing power grids, bid with Protecta’s EuroProt+ product line and won the assignment for the secondary reconstruction of the 66 kV distribution network. In addition to the main substation with ten bays and a double busbar, the assignment covers seven radial substations supplying 66/18 kV transformers. In this project Protecta delivered the bay units, transformer protection devices and the busbar protection as well as the complete control units for the bays. Protecta Ltd. was responsible for the development, production and configuration work required for the commissioning of the whole system. The successful implementation of this project will be an important international reference for Protecta Ltd. in its expansion in international markets.
This multi-stage project was launched in October 2012 and was completed in May 2014. The project value exceeded HUF 80 million.

PAKS 6kV
In December 2012, in the context of the service life extension of the plant., MVM Paks Nuclear Power Plant Co. issued an invitation to tender for the upgrade of the protection and control system of the 6 kV distributors for normal operation (ABOS4) and for the backup system (ABOS2). Protecta Ltd. was selected, from a group of international bidders, to deliver the complete protection system. In this project, in line with the annual maintenance schedule of the blocks, a total of 576 EuroProt+ devices will be delivered until mid-2018. Protecta Ltd. is responsible for the development, production and configuration work required for the commissioning of the whole system. The project value exceeds HUF 350 million.

ENEL
ENEL S.p.A. is the largest electricity utility company in Italy, responsible for the electric power supply of the country (with the exception of a few cities) on the 10 kV – 130 kV voltage levels. Several local electricity utility companies also use protection system and protective devices, including relays, approved ENEL.The cooperation of Protecta and ENEL started in 2002. First, Protecta delivered Petersen coil controllers and high-impedance earth-fault protection devices. A few years later Protecta won a tender to deliver high-voltage distance protection devices, and in the subsequent years it was the exclusive supplier in this field. Up till now some 2000 Protecta distance protection devices have been installed on the ENEL network, most of them in Italy, a few hundred in Romania. Thus more than half of the 120 kV network of Italy is protected by our devices.
Since 2014, Protecta has been the exclusive supplier of a new transformer protection, which is an element of the first IEC 61850-based protection system in the ENEL network.

CSARNOKTÉR
In the mid-2000’s ELMÜ embarked on the primary and secondary reconstruction of the outdated medium-voltage switchgears. As the first stage of this long-term strategy, in the summer of 2011 a call for tenders was issued for the reconstruction of the Csarnoktér 120/10 kV medium-voltage substation. Protecta was awarded the assignment to deliver the secondary system of the substation, with more than 50 bays and a double busbar with bus switches. This project was the first ELMÜ substation with an IEC 61850 communication system; Protecta completed this assignment with flying colours. This successful project was followed by the secondary reconstruction of the 120 kV system, where Protecta delivered the complete protection system for three 120/10 kV transformers, the related automatic devices and the busbar protection system. Protecta was also responsible for engineering as a whole.
This stage of the project was completed at the end of 2014, the total project value exceeding HUF 100 million.

Stedin
Stedin is a gas and electricity utility company in the Netherlands. In 2012 we submitted a bid in response to their call for tenders together with the Austrian Sprecher Automation. Protecta undertook to supply transformation and line differential protection for the 60 kV network. We were selected the second best bidder. As a result, a four-year framework agreement was concluded and we delivered dozens of devices. We also performed customised development, particularly in the field of line protection communication. In 2015 the framework agreement was renewed for another 4 years.

LEGO
The ground-braking ceremony of the new LEGO factory in Nyíregyháza was held in April 2013. Protecta submitted a bid for a protection and control systems for two bays and two transformers and the control system of the entire medium-voltage switchgear. After several rounds of negotiations, Protecta was awarded this high-profile project. In the implementation phase, several meetings were held with E.ON and LEGO because the envisaged system was to be operated jointly by these companies.
The fact that the completed system was delivered one month before the deadline envisaged in the tight implementation schedule testifies to the success of the project.
The total project value was above HUF 60 million; it was the first protection and control system with an IEC 61850 communication system implemented in the E.ON TITÁSZ network.
Transnet
Transnet is the largest firm in the transportation network of South Africa. It also operates harbours, a railway network and liquid fuel pipeline systems. Cooperation between the railway traction section of this company and Protecta started in 2004, when we delivered the first distance protection devices for railway lines for testing purposes. Siemens and Protecta devices were tested in the same substation. During the test period both devices performed well but eventually Protecta’s device was selected because of price considerations. Since then, Transnet has been purchasing only Protecta devices to protect railway traction lines. At present, more than 150 such devices are in operation. In 2015 we started delivering the new EuroProt+ devices as well.
